Spent a very frustrating couple of months trying to get outboard gear to work with Reaper. I could never get it to stay in sync it was always out by half a beat no matter what i did. Spent 30 minutes setting up buzz to do the same thing now everything works suddenly bang on timing followed this post by Buzztard. I would add that if u go into attributes and set both in and out to the same midi channel it will record the notes as well as being in sync.

Could be an interface issue, I used a cheap usb/midi interface and had the same problem with reaper , switched to a presonus one and now it works perfectly.
