open source?

Post by onecircles »

Will Oskari ever open source this freeware? It seems there are enough volunteers working on machines etc. that Buzz could see further development if the client were released to us. This software changed my life forever. I know two programming languages C and Python now, I could conceivably contribute to Buzz, but I would probably give my efforts to a more open paradigm like https://github.com/zrythm/zrythm or fulfill my dream of coding my own DAW. I have invested thousands of hours into the buzz universe, I wish it could go on forever, but with a stagnant client how can it?
Oskari, I love you.

Hi onecircles, long time not seen, how are you?

yes, its a bit depressing that buzz is stuck for a while. I think open source will not happen, but you can use .net approach for extensions/plugins/machines. ala WDE was doing extensiveley. Unfortunateley he was not actice for a pretty long time now .... hmm
But thanx for that zrythm link anyway. That looks interesting, I am a bit jealous about its good piano roll editor, thats what Buzz misses imho. Perhaps somone can extract it from zrhythm an port to Buzz? :D

There is a repository of the opensource buzzmachines:

https://github.com/Buzztrax/buzzmachines

And the closest think to opensource Buzz is Buzztrax (Linux only), but I have never seen it running:

https://github.com/Buzztrax/buzzmachines

There used to be the Armstrong library (former libzzub), but I can not find source code now.

But MachineInterface.h declares:

Code: Select all

This header file may be used to write _freeware_ DLL "machines" for Buzz
Using it for anything else is not allowed without a permission from the author
