New contest : The 500 kb bmw Summer Solstice Contest

Post by magmavander »

Thanks to th0ke for the idea.

A very simple rule : make an album including between 6 and 10 songs, in bmw format, no samples included, buzz machines only and 100 kb maximum size for the complete album.

If you're not very inspired, I think that more than one buzzer can be included in an album.

Maybe 100k is enough for an album of really minimal techno. I don't know how small a bmx could be, I normally use samples so mine aren't very small.

I'd like to participate. When is the deadline? I won't be able to do anything till next month.

Edit: and I think 100kb is not enough. I just put 18 machines in a song with no patterns or automation and it's already up to 53kb.

If it's 100kB zipped, then it should be no problem to pack 10 songs in there. If it's 100kB uncompressed, then it'll just take a little more trickery, is all.

Well, fine, maybe a lot more trickery, but it is within the realm of possibility...

Either way, count me in!

the famous mr snider back again ! cool :o :D

i think the rules shouldn't be too strict. if the result is an album with a few "buzz only" tracks, the task should be fulfilled. zipped is ok for me.
wouldn't it be great to have a few of those albums available. deadline ?! as soon as possible ... or three months or one or what ?!

zipped or not can make a huge difference ... so if we want to limit the size we should say:

500KB - Zipped :?: :!:

NEW OFFICIAL RULES :

- Max 500 kb album,
- zipped,
- minimum 6 songs,
- no samples,
- no external machines
- deadline is 21 june (summer solstice).

That seems good no ?

btw : should we have an audio version (mp3/ogg) too ? And put all (zip + audio) at archive.org like the 60x60 buzz contest ?

if you like it samplebased : for small file sizes i would use matilde tracker and a limited set of short samples.
get creative on how to use a tracker with tremolo / vibrato / offset / retrigger effects. :)
also matilde has integrated filters.

that would be an interesting challenge:
use only one matilde machine and a given set of samples...

cheers :)

btw: this reminds me of a tune i made mainly from the sound of pushing a floppy disk into the drive:
http://strobotone.de/content/records/20 ... otdisk.zip
nearly all percussions come from that one sample (ran through eq and matilde´s pitch down tracker command)

Yes, totally do that if you want non buzz people to listen to it.
bmx/bmw is a problem anyway, even if you exchange between buzzers. I've checked out plenty of before that I couldn't load because I was missing machines or didn't have the exact same versions installed.

Cool idea for a compo btw. I'm seriously pondering to join in somehow, although an album is maybe a bit much.
Still... interesting *wiggles fingers*

Yes, you're right but you dont have to put new songs in the album. I had the idea that I will remake bmx that use a lot of external material (samples, vst, soundfonts and such) in a new "pure buzz" version
So it's not forbidden to use older songs, you dont have to write new songs. Just to make an album with bmw only (ferrari are not allowed).

totally swamped right now with side projects but I think im gonna have to re order priorities for this . Down !

also saw that someone up above mentioned using malitide and some samples .. well I mainly use utrk with lots of tracker effects .. so some samples or def no samples .. I can write either way tho yeah generally use drum samples ..

at the very least this will be a great chance for me to experiment with some new peer control schemes ive been thinking about lately .. ill prob make noise .

I think the strobotone's idea is very cool too and should be the next contest. But the main ideas here are 'bmw' and 'max 500 kb'

I totaly agree. Working with constraints is always exciting in term of creativity.

Sounds fun!
I've been working with limits at least 6 years or something so I'll probably use only old songs.
Just need to find some without VSTs and samples.

good to see no submissions yet, i dont feel so bad now that my song hasn't progressed much over the past few weeks. I'm aiming to come up with some patterns that can be creatively improvised with the new jeskola LIVE machine, and using my recent studies into music theory to make them fit together no matter what the user clicks on.
