Buzz at 20

Jeskola Buzz just turned 20 years old, sometime in September. To mark the occasion, I thought we'd put together a compilation. The requirements are a little unusual, as it's not a competition, it won't be curated, and finished songs are not necessary. I'll explain that as I explain the guidelines.

1. Since this is for buzz's twentieth birthday, it'd be cool to dig back a little bit into our old files:

Music should be older than 10 years. The oldest you can find, and love.

2. Often, bringing a song to completion doesn't keep the seed of excitement or inspiration you started with. Packaging your experience of getting completely sucked inside a few looping bars of sound is tricky and not always the point of firing Buzz up. So, whether in addition to songs or instead of, it'd be cool to hear the things you haven't finished, but that you still like. The second rule is:

Snippets or songs, snippets and songs, your choice.

3. We have to set some time limits:

At least 10 seconds of sound, but maybe don't go over 30 minutes. Multiple files OK and encouraged.

That's it. Think of it as an archaeological dig somewhere between you and Jeskola Buzz, for artifacts that capture the moments of inspiration and obsession you've had together.

A few logistical things:

Upload your music and info wherever you prefer, just make it available for download so I/we can get it and host it. Everything will go one page (with a simple player). If you need space, PM me, or you can email files to buzztwenty _at_ gmail.

Should be mp3.

If you know old buzzers that have moved on, reach out to them, maybe they'd like to join in. We'll keep this open for the next month.

Edit: If you're using soundcloud, please remember to enable downloads :)

Something just crossed my mind, with all these snippets…

What about doing a companion to the compilation album? How about people doing re-mixes using some of the snippets (with the original poster's blessing of course)?

What do you think elekt? What do others think?

Hi Candle, I guess for me remixes are beyond the scope of this compilation. But let's see what happens. And many thanks :)

Glad you're in, magmavander.

Not a problem. Thought it might be a little too ambitious, maybe a challenge for another time. I am looking forward to going thru my archive & finding lost gems - as well as hearing everyone else's lost gems & unfinished ideas.

I put my contribution up here.

I included a bunch of unfinished snippets as well as a few songs that either were never released or were part of projects that are no longer up on the internet. I guess I should put the finished songs on BuzzTunes too at some point. It was fun to dig through the archives and remember all those good times. Thanks!

Thanks magmavander. Lovely.

As for bmx, I can host them, but it's very much optional. Most people don't have project files that are that old.

This track was originally made for this demo in march 2005:

This one is also from 2005 or older:

And this one I know is from 2001:

Enjoy!

Of course buzzers can send their bmx only if they wish/can. I will upload mine.
Thanks!!

Well, here's my winning entry (from a massive 2 participants) from the old Buzzchurch The Hymn Compo in December 2005. This was actually an unofficial round of the contest.
I cleaned it up a bit today, mainly fixing a huge DC offset in the Guru5 doing the bassline. Also put a rather crude limiter on the master. Nothing else.
edit: link removed
If you'd rather have an MP3 let me know.

I have over a thousand random snippets backed up in an archive. If I get all too bored some day I could do some digging but I suspect many of the files will have something wonky going on in Newbuzz. And 99% of them are shit anyway :D

Hi Paul, yes, bring on the snippets, I think that's the most interesting part. I'll convert the file.

If anyone thinks their stuff is embarrassing, send anonymously/pseudonymously.

Well, I'd rather not have you do a lossy -> lossy conversion from ogg to mp3, so here's an mp3 from the original wav.

I'll see about the snippets but won't promise anything yet :)

Finally got a chance to go thru my archive. I guess I've only been using Buzz since 2005, so most of my stuff is more recent. But, anyway - here's what I've found:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y3629fda991z ... HpS0a?dl=0

The one snippet is from 2008 (which is past the 10 year mark), but I liked it a lot & figured I'd include it. If you want to disqualify it, elekt, that's fine.

Enjoy!
