gamepad as midi controller?

Post by esp81 »

I have a cheap gamepad that I would like to use as an x/y midi controller, what is the best way to go about this in Buzz? :geek:

There's this: http://buzz.robotplanet.dk/machineinfo.php?id=7816

Haven't used it, though, not sure if it lets you use push buttons. If not, you can also get a third party piece of software, like Glovepie, then use midi yoke to route midi to buzz.

I think the only one who knows the subject deeply to the root is our MIDI guru which means Tinga. :)

BTDSys PeerCtrl is perfect but only for XBox pad, an you can us 4 simultaneously, 19 controls (i have templates).
For other pad, maybe you can try this, it convert to midi.

Gah!
Apparently I can't read instructions.
Been trying for a long time tonight to get the hang of midicontrollers. I've never used them before so I have no clue where to start.

been reading all instructions I can find on Buzz Wiki and other places.

As mentioned above, I have a gamepad (non xbox). Then what? How do I get the gamepad to talk to a parameter on a buzzmachine?

I've read up on polac midi but doesn't get it.....

MJoy as tinga recommended gives errormessages all the time but I've manged to get some reactions on fergo joystick midi ( http://www.fergonez.net/index.php?lang= ... pps&pid=14 ) but part from that i do not know how to operate it and can't find a manual.

I realize that this is an annoying post and that you all think RTFM!! I apologize for that. I also realize that reading and trying until you get the eureka-experience is important for character and learning but my time is very limited, I have really tried to get grip on this and I just want this to work so if someone can just point out a direction for me I'll follow happily.

Will everything just work easier if I find a second hand xbox control? Does old xbox work or does it have to be xbox360?

/Apologies

edit: forgot to mention that midi yoke won't install on my computer.

Xbox360, a wireless is perfect, and you can use four pads, BTDSys PeerCtrl is a great great machine, the customisable curves give an enormous potential to the joystick.
I've some Xbox pads totally broken, i use it for my musical chairs, and they work, so a second hand will be fine.

midi yoke is cool, of course necessary for external midi stuff, with it you can record midifiles in buzz using another software.

Ah. So with bo360 I can use all buttons at the same time, even d-button...good. :-) So, how does this work? How do I get a xbox360 to talk to buzz?
Yes, I installed this yesterday but didn't really get aound understanding how to use it.

So how do I get a gamepad to communicate with Buzz?

So, while I scratch my head.... Does someone sit on a foolproof manual for virtual midi?
I've installed loopMidi.. Then what? Every site seems to expect background knowledge... Where do I go from here? Tried freepie but didn't grasp how to set it up. Midiyoke sounds like obsolete while reading others experiences.

Guess the easist would be to use an xbox360control but don't have one. Need to find a used one but till then...

So, Tinga and other pro's please enlighten me I have no clues to what steps I'm missing.

I have borrowed an xbox360 overnight and would like to figure out the process of doing this.

I have installed peerctrl as recommended above by Tinga.
I have installed loopmidi as recommended by scalewalker.
I have created a loop-port in loopmidi, I have, in buzz preferences (midi input), selected this particular loop-port. After that I try to add a controller but fail (still in preferences, midi input).
What obvious part am I missing?

also, via fergo, loopmidi and an average pc gamepad I manage to get some kind of ticking noise out of buzz but not sure what to do with it...
Is there a turorial on how to handle midi?
Should I go to polac asio instead of wasapi for instance?

At least here I can add the controller in preferences....but if I try Polac Midi in>midi in device I get the reply "Midi in device is in use, try another one..."

"Midi in device is in use, try another one..."

Unselect the device it in Buzz's own preferences.

At first, xbox ctrl has nothing to do with midi, to make the assignment, the xbox pad has to be connected before launch of Buzz, then open the assignment settings window and click on "Control Plugin Settings", if the pad is not connected, you can't see it in the list.
Here is a template with all the 18 ctrl, for one pad,
xbox1_ctrl_all.zip
(1.05 KiB) Downloaded 277 times
.
It's cool that there is no midi for that, same for peertrig, I don't like midi, of course midi is very useful, but many params are 7 bits, I prefer mostly 16 bits params we have in Buzz.
I confirm, midi loop is perfect, I use it for leap motion and it's perfect.
@AndersBrontosaurus, hope my answer can help you, It's really funny DJ stuff, and don't scruple if you have other questions ;)

Thanks, ags. Maybe i should have thought about that myself but since I don't understand this yet, the most obvious things is still out of my reach.
Anyway, when rightclicking a parameter in a machine to bind to midi I get the reply no controller defined... so...
Shooo, I'm so frustrated at this. How come I can't get it right? all keywords like midi and polac is to common to use in search so I haven't found any other threads about it. Guess I just have to go through all threads on the forum unless someone can point me somewhere.

@tinga: The 16bitparameterissue is offcourse a very strong reason to stay with xboxcontrols.
Still I need help to understand the secret of midiconnections since I want to be able to use other tools as well. Qwerty-keyboards in particular but gamepads are my first exercise so all help is good help.
