I'm going to the extreme to try to clean up my buzz folder, and I'm considering removing many of the included machines that I don't use.

I can of course remove as many of the synths and effects as I like I'm sure, (NOT QSAMO!)
But which of these are really necessary? There's a machine for pattern XP and for the Piano Roll. I don't understand why there are machines for these things, but I bet if I remove them I won't be too happy.

What is Jeskola Relativion? Can I remove Arpeggiator? Groove 1? Loop Recorder? (is that the same as the hd recorder?)

And while I'm at it any tips for keeping a trim and efficient buzz folder would be appreciated. I just discovered the machines blacklist, which I can't believe I didn't know about, so I'm going to start with that.

Yes, the machine black list is certainly a good starting point. Generally, keeping the buzz folder minimal (by keeping only fully stable machines) is how I've reached a quite stable system.

Of course, knowing which machines are really entirely stable is a bit of a challenge.

relativion is a peer machine that does interesting stuff when you play notes. double click it and select a target machine, then start keyjazzing and experience wonder.

arpeggiator is a standalone version of the arpeggiator included with corona, it's fun to use.

you could delete both, but they're quite stable and cool so you should try them out before you delete them.

Groove 1 i'm curious about too, i've never been able to figure out what it does exactly.

as for deleting the pxp and piano roll machines, i'm not sure. there was an old thread on here in which someone explained why pxp has a machine of it's own, but i can't find it.

something that would be cool to see is a way to show only certain machines in your machine list. like now, we can sort by effect, generator, control, or all. if we had a way to tag machines, or make small lists of machines, and sort them in additional ways or create a new category, we could eliminate some of the feeling of being overwhelmed by looking at this huge list and knowing that we only use a few of the machines regularly. sort of like how you can edit your index.txt to have groups the way you want them.

so you could create a little template for your machine list, called "frequently used machines" or some such, and have it just include the machines you want to see, without having to go through and delete stuff. with the storage we have these days there's not as much need to keep it small, and this way you could even have blacklisted machines still in your gear folder for loading old songs or whatever, but you wouldn't have to look at them all the time when you want to find the machine you need.

Even if you empty the contents of generators and effects, many machines remain in the machines view. If you pull one of these machines into the workspace and open it up, it's parameters load, whether or not it is present in generators/effects. I do wish I could really simplify my install, but I guess it doesn't mantter. Some of these machines could be essential to the program (wave in/out), but with some others, it seems random (filter 3).

Why does it matter? Some machines are built into Buzz. Forget it, move on.
