Old school / chiptune arpeggio effect

Post by Pekka »

Hi,

What would be the best way of recreating that chiptune style arpeggio effect in Buzz? I've been toying around with arpeggiator and PeerChord but I haven't achieved authentic sounding sound. Is there an effect where I can control which notes are being looped? I think that I cannot do that in arpeggiator or PeerChord (or I just don't know how to do it hehe :).

Have you checked out Ruff Speccy II? I really like that machine.

Also, I like ymVST a lot for chiptune.

It's been ages since I used it but I think Kazuya GBSound can do that kind of thing...

Thanks for the advice! I could find all mentioned gens/vsts except ScaleWalker. Where can I get it?

EDIT: found ScaleWalker as well. Thanks!

ScaleWalker offers an option or two to mess with. Here's another short video to give a taste of:
  • use of duration time and cycle/repeat time
    scale and tonic
    row layering vs row chaining
multiple segments separated by 'or' rule
    gapping via null notes
use of tracks to determine things like midi channel, note length, velocity, octave offset
Let me know if you need any support (preferably by posting in the snowglobe machines thread)

Edited to add: ScaleWalker output is MIDI. If you want to trigger buzz machines that aren't MIDI-ready you need to use an in-between like IX Split or Polac MIDI Bus

GBSound, Speccy II and the unmentioned Krimzon AY-3-8910 native buzz machines are the best answers to this question if you really are after authenticity. The design of the arp/note modes of these synths and the way they are implemented are just as important as the sound generation itself. Simply slapping an arpeggiator onto a "chippy" synth might come close at times, but if you're after the real deal you should check out those chip emulator machines.. they're some of the best out there, vst or otherwise.

Never heard of that one. Got a link? I can't find it on buzzmachines or buzz.robotplanet.dk.

Is the best way not to just use the actual old school /chiptune arpeggio effect of any of the trackers (e.g. the 00 xy effect in Matilde) using a simple sin, square, triangle wave :D

Sure :) I was just wondering if there is a way of doing it with some generator :) btw. I guess unwieldy tracker doesn't have arpeggio? I went through the effects but could not find it.

FSM ArpMan, GreenMilk are also very nice for old school arpeggios, and they are midi.
I'm playing now with ArpMan, many years I didn't use it, great sound. 8-)
