qsamo combine question

Post by szaszhareen »

I've been trying to understand the combine feature of qsamo.

can anyone shed some light on the sub, mul, and, or, xor, and add settings? how exactly are these combining the three oscs? it's probably a bit of a noob question but these seem to be unique to qsamo as i've not had much luck understanding them with my google fu and still developing knowledge of synthesis.

the "M" parameters also remain a mystery to me.

thanks! :)

Afaik 'and', 'xor', and 'or' are the bitwise operators. so it's doing a very basic digital operation, ie checking that both of the inputs have a '1' in the bits of the data to give a '1' as output.

I think that 'mul' is the rather obvious multiply both inputs... That and the three above can be found in jeskola modulator too, so you could use them in constructing sounds from other generators too.

'Sub' is subtract, so that would be like adding a signal at 180 phase.

thanks, that clears it up a bit. after looking at the M section more closely i'm pretty sure the M stands for modulation.

that's right. you basically have a filter lfo/env and a modulation lfo/env
also look at the tab where you can draw curves for some parameters. use your mouse wheel to scroll in and out and create detailed envelopes for some parameters.

one powerful thing is: use 3 oscs, set the combine to sync and play with osc2 tune and/or phase while cranking up unison voices. plus, a nice high-resonance bp24 filter crazy lfo does nice things on that, too. you could get something like this sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_sB_Ws2yCQ, at around 1:50

There is a great tool in buzz, signal analysis, with it you can see exactly what's happen with "combine"

Thanks tinga! That is pretty eye opening. It's amazing all the features of buzz that i look at every day and never really think to use. :?
