Can't search for 'Pattern XP'

Post by mosis »

"The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: pattern xp.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards."

Can't this be fixed? I had the same problem on another forum and couldn't search for something like 'Windows XP'.

this is a PITA and it seems to be, as you mentioned, a problem that many phpbb templates have. it's been a problem since this forum was launched and probably won't be fixed (it's been brought up a few times with no resolution), but there is a workaround! (as with most things buzz hehe) ;)

just use google to search the forum (and i don't mean LMGTFY). type

Code: Select all

site:http://forums.jeskola.net pattern xp
into google or pretty much any search engine. you can replace

Code: Select all

pattern xp
with any other search term you'd like to search the forum for. :)

the search results are usually superior to those generated by the phpbb search anyway.

Many thanks, I will use that from now on. I know that some other forums offer a Google search at the top of their own search page, because of this strange problem. I supposed the indexing is more difficult if the board software uses words with fewer than four letters or something, but in the world of computers, with so many acronyms, it's a pain as you say.

I keep hoping that F1 key (one day) opens up a native/built-in/global "PXP view" (sort of like Renoise has now), instead of opening the not-so-needed-help-section (PDF reading is preferable). :) Oooh, it makes me all goosebumpy and adorably geeky just thinking about it. ;)
