How to set parameters for carrier for vocoder?

Post by AndersBrontosaurus »

Inspired by Magmavanders demo I decided to try out a vocoder. I found it difficult to set the parameters for the carrier in a way that it sounds good. I've tried qsamo, infector and simple oscillators with no great luck. Does anyone have any tips, hints or parameters to share?

Layer in some white noise and a little distortion.

What do you mean exactly ? You cant achieve a good carrier sounding ?
The ld vocoder's parameters are very important for the final sounding.
Try first to put dry carrier and dry modulator to zero. NumBands and EnvDecay are very important too.
And you can use fx after the carrier synth to make it sound better. Same for the modulator.
You can also add fx to the ld vocoder.
Avoid using lfo on cutoff's synths, sometimes it "erase" a part of the sound.
A bad sampled modulator can be a reason to make the synth sounds not very good...
In my video I use chords for the carrier but you can also use just one note.
Do you have an example of the sound you want to create ?

PS :
It's better to use a sustained note/chord, but if you use shorter, like in Infector if you use a 1 tick long note, you have to put more notes to follow the modulator.
